Internship

The internship will involve extensive practice in the manipulation of digital resources, and interns will play a substantial role in the development of data for the project.

In the year 2015 the project group hosted a team of five interns from the universities of Pennsylvania, Cambridge, Kraków, the Joannes a Lasco Library in Emden and the French national library school ENSSIB, along with a number of volunteers from the universities of St Andrews, Dundee and Moscow. It is intended to recruit a team of roughly similar size for the year 2015.

The internship will be for a period of 6 weeks, to be taken in the period between 6 June and 15 July 2016. The USTC will meet the costs of transportation to and from St Andrews, and housing will be provided in university accommodation. There is no further remuneration attached.

All interns will also attend the USTC annual book conference, ‘Conflict and Controversy’, scheduled for 16-18 June 2015. The costs of their places at the conference will be met by the project. This will also be the occasion for the formal launch of the extension of the USTC to 1650.

The competition will also include two sponsored external funded intern positions. One position sponsored by SHARP (The Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing) will be specifically designated for the collection of data for Book History Online. Another position, sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation of New York, will be committed to assisting our new programme, Preserving the World’s Rarest Books. Candidates wishing particularly to be considered for one of either of these positions should indicate as such on the attached application form.

Applicants should have interest in the field of early modern history or book history. Applicants should also have a command of written and spoken English, and fluency in at least one other European language. Training in Latin will also be an advantage. Likely candidates will either be pursuing a postgraduate qualification or have recently completed a postgraduate degree.
