Internship

The National Library of Scotland is offering a four-week paid internship in rare book librarianship to begin in August 2016.

This internship is aimed at people preparing for a career in rare book librarianship and offers the opportunity to spend a month working with the National Library of Scotland’s rare book collections, carrying out a programme of practical tasks relating to collection management and digitisation. A Rare Books Curator will be the intern’s mentor throughout the internship, and on a day to day basis the intern will work with colleagues in a number of different areas of the Library, including the Conservation, Digital, and Special Collections Reading Room teams.

Besides learning about the work involved in the collection management and digitisation of rare books, and in running a special collections reading room and other public services, the intern will gain experience handling a large number and variety of rare books, and may spend some time working with other materials from the Library’s manuscript and modern collections. There will also be a programme of induction sessions with the Rare Books curatorial team and other areas of the Library.

Specific training and work-based activities for this internship will be:

  • Assisting with the Library’s programme of auditing the rare book collections
  • Assisting the Special Collections Reading Room team with public services relating to the rare book and manuscript collections
  • Digitisation preparation and metadata work
  • Collections management activities
  • Opportunities to contribute to the @nlsrarebooks twitter account and other Library social media

This internship is primarily aimed at applicants either currently enrolled in or within a year of completing a programme leading to a qualification in professional librarianship at undergraduate or postgraduate level, or about to begin a programme at postgraduate level in autumn 2016. No previous experience working with rare books or special collections is required.

To apply please send your CV and a statement of no more than 500 words which tells us the benefits you believe you would gain from taking part in the internship to jobs@nls.uk

The closing date for applications is Friday 22 July 2016 at midday.

The intern will receive a grant of £1250.00.

If you have any questions about the internship please contact Helen Vincent on 0131 623 3894 for an informal chat.

Please note that the successful candidate will be subject to Basic Disclosure Scotland security clearance.
