Organisation

Flanders Heritage Library is a network organisation established by six heritage libraries in Flanders (Belgium). Through projects and research, we aim to develop competence and spread knowledge about preserving heritage library collections and making them accessible. Additionally, we wish to raise public awareness about the riches of heritage library collections in Flanders and Brussels.

We offer a comprehensive website in Dutch via www.vlaamse-erfgoedbibliotheek.be [1]. If you wish to receive more information about our organisation in English, feel free to contact us [2] via phone or email.

Objectives

The objectives of the Flanders Heritage Library are clearly outlined in article 40.2 of the Cultural Heritage Decree of the Flemish community. These same goals are included in the articles of association of the Flanders Heritage Library:

  • To harmonise collection development policies between partner libraries, based on collection subjects and priorities
  • To develop a common collection policy for 'Flandrica', particularly for publications of importance to Flanders from a cultural or historical point of view or because of their heritage value; in relation to the former, investigate the possibilities for organising a supplemental regional legal depot
  • To develop expertise and build competence in the area of preservation of heritage collections
  • To catalogue heritage collections and to develop expertise around metadata and standards for heritage collections
  • To digitize heritage collections
  • To create a solution for the long term preservation and access for digitized and born-digital heritage collections
  • To organise and participate in communication initiatives to raise public awareness of the heritage libraries in Flanders and to develop competence in the area of community communication

These long-term objectives cannot be realised within a single policy period. Multiple policy periods will be needed for the Flanders Heritage Library and the entire sector to take a clear position in Flanders and the international professional networks. Therefore, a step-by-step approach is taken and during the first policy period of the Flanders Heritage Library (2009-2012), the emphasis is on identifying collections, needs and requirements in more detail.

By train

Take a train to Antwerpen Centraal. In addition to the regular train service from Belgian National Railways [13], this station is serviced by high speed Thalys [14] trains.

Leave the station on the side of Astridplein. At the entrance of the Astrid Park Plaza hotel (opposite from the train station), take tram 10 or 11 in the direction of Melkmarkt.

Deboard at stop Melkmarkt in Korte Nieuwstraat, at the entrance of Heritage Library Hendrik Conscience. Continue for a few more meters and then turn right, into Sint-Pieter en Paulusstraat. This street turns into Leeuw van Vlaanderenstraat.

To return to the train station, take tram 10 or 11 at the same stop you deboarded, in the same direction (the line makes a u-turn).

By bus or tram

Nearly all bus and tram lines passing through the historical centre of Antwerp have a stop at less than five minutes in walking distance from Leeuw van Vlaanderenstraat. You may plan your tram or bus ride via the website of the Flemish public transit company, De Lijn [15] (in dutch only).

Our our offices are located in a pedestrian zone and in the immediate surroundings, there is hardly any street parking. You may use the underground paid parkings at Eiermarkt (next to the KBC building) or Groenplaats. Leeuw van Vlaanderenstraat is a five minute walk from either one (see map). More information about parking is to be found on the website Parkeren in Antwerpen [19] (in dutch only).
